Your glass of some fine relishing whiskey! Whether you are with your friends or spending some ‘me’ time, no winter evening is complete without some good whiskey.

Known as the “Water of life”, Whiskey is the testament of age old tradition and culture. Having originated from ancient craftsmanship of distillation, nothing less than an art, it is one of the most relished beverages in the world today. Among the different types, we have the one that is particularly unique in flavor, a distinct and bold spirit known as Rye Whiskey.

Having a kick of spice and a dry taste, Rye whiskey is made of 51% of rye grain. It is the same natural spicy peppery taste of rye that makes this whiskey so distinct from the others, resurging its popularity in the modern whiskey scene. Not only is it bold but also versatile adding depth to your cocktails and drinks, also giving you a bold reason as to why rye whiskey should be a part of your collection.

What is Rye Whiskey?

  • It is a type of whiskey that is made, particularly in the colder regions of the world, using Rye grains, typically making up at least 51% of the total composition. These rye grains give it the unique bold spice and is often described as a peppery flavor with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. The warm and dry finish add complexity to its flavor.

The origins of Rye whiskey date back to 17th & 18th century America when European settlers brought distillation techniques which were used on Rye grains as they were abundantly available in states of Pennsylvania and Maryland.

A predominant and staple in the American diet and economy in the 18th century and known to have significantly influenced American culture, Rye whiskey saw a steady decline in production and popularity after the Prohibition era.

Legal Requirements for Rye Whiskey

  • Mash Bill: In the US, for a whiskey to be labeled as Rye legally, it must be from a mash bill that is composed of 51% of Rye grains.
  • Aging: Must be aged in new and charred oak barrels. To be aged as “Straight Rye Whiskey” it must be aged for a minimum of two years with no added flavors for coloring.

Rye & Sons - Straight Rye Whiskey (750ML)

  • Bottling: It must be bottled at a minimum volume of 40% alcohol.
  • Distillation: When distilling, the spirit must be no more than 80% alcohol.

The robust flavor of Rye Whiskey comes from the predominant taste notes of spice. The taste is often described to be peppery with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg that add in the kick.

It is the high content of Rye that plays a crucial role in adding the distinct notes of spice as compared to the sweet and mellow notes of other whiskeys. It also imparts a crisp and dry finish adding more depth to its flavor profile.

The spice distinguishes it from the sweeter notes found in Bourbon whiskey which is made primarily of corn. It is the uniqueness and complexity that make Rye whiskey stand out and also make some prefer it over Bourbon.

How Rye Whiskey is Made

The Distillation Process: After preparing mash by grinding the rye grains with hot water converting the starches into fermentable sugar. Then with yeast being added to it, the mash is transferred to fermentable tanks where after several days of fermenting it produces alcohol and carbon dioxide. Finally, the fermented liquid known as ‘wash’ is heated where alcohol separates from other components in the form of vapor which is then collected, condensed to liquid.

Aging Process: Then this fermented and distilled alcohol is stored to age in new and charred oak barrels. For Rye whiskey it needs to be stored for at least two years. The aging process imparts flavor and color to the whiskey.

Bottling and Packaging: After aging, the Rye whiskey is filtered and diluted to the desired proof or alcohol concentration and is then bottled and packaged.
