Their story
Amazi Foods was started in 2016 by Renee Dunn, an American who first got to know Uganda's fruit while doing thesis research in the country. The company is based in Washington, DC, but everything it sells is made in Uganda.
Dunn set out to keep the jobs and the value close to the farms. Amazi buys fruit directly from smallholder farmers, pays well above local market prices, and has created more than 150 jobs, most of them held by young people and women.
The line includes jackfruit chews and roasted plantain chips with bright flavors like ginger lime and chili lime.
How it's made
Jackfruit, plantains and spices are bought directly from small farms and processed in Uganda, where they are grown. The snacks are vegan and gluten-free, with no added sugar or preservatives, and the plantain chips are roasted in coconut or olive oil.
I think the idea of creating more equity in our supply chains is important.
Why we carry them
We like that the whole snack, from fruit to bag, stays in Uganda. The jackfruit chews are chewy, tangy and a fun change from the usual dried fruit.
