Their story

Anchorage Brewing is the project of Gabe Fletcher, who spent 13 years brewing at another Anchorage brewery before striking out on his own. He started by renting time on someone else's brewhouse, then pumping the wort down into oak foeders in the basement to ferment.

The early beers were Belgian-inspired and fermented with Brettanomyces, along with the occasional barrel-aged stout or barleywine. Fletcher later moved into his own building in Anchorage, with a brewhouse, a long foeder cellar and a taproom out front.

Its best known beer is A Deal with the Devil, a barleywine, and the lineup now also includes hazy IPAs alongside the sours and farmhouse ales.

How it's made

The brewery focuses on sour, barrel-aged, mixed-fermentation and farmhouse beers. Beer is brewed on a 20-barrel system and aged in temperature-controlled oak foeders and barrels.

I wanted total control over what I was doing.
Gabe Fletcher, founder, to Brewing Industry Guide (2020)
