Their story
Counter Culture Coffee was founded in 1995 in Durham, North Carolina, by Brett Smith and Fred Houk. They started roasting in Durham and sold their first coffee to a local restaurant.
The company now roasts in both Durham and Emeryville, California, and runs training centers in cities across the country, including the Bay Area, where baristas and the public can learn to brew.
How it's made
Counter Culture buys mostly from small estates and cooperatives and works directly with growers. In 2008 it created its own direct trade certification with standards for quality, fairness and sustainability, and it tracks progress through an annual sustainability scorecard.
Our featured pick
Slow Motion Decaf Coffee Beans (12OZ)
$22.00
Slow down and savor a cup of coffee, simply because it’s delicious. We pay extra attention to our decaf coffee because you deserve a flavorful, full-bodied cup without the caffeine kick. With notes of molasses and cocoa, Slow Motion is equally delicious as any of our caffeinated coffees.
Why we carry them
We trust Counter Culture for coffee that is carefully sourced and roasted well. Their seasonal single origins are worth exploring.
