Their story
Oaktown Spice Shop is run by John Beaver and Erica Perez, a married couple who moved to Oakland from Milwaukee in 2009. Beaver had learned the trade at The Spice House in Milwaukee, where he fell for the range of spices and the far-off places they came from.
They opened their shop on Grand Avenue near Lake Merritt to give locals a better option than the supermarket spice aisle, and later added a second shop in Albany. Home cooks make up much of the crowd, along with restaurants and bars, and the shop runs regular workshops.
How it's made
Oaktown sells whole and ground spices, dried herbs and its own seasoning blends, such as its all-purpose seasoning and the Grand Lake Shake, from its shops in Oakland and Albany.
Our featured pick
Umami Sea Salt (2OZ)
$16.00
Umami: the fifth taste! Black garlic and shiitake mushrooms are used to achieve umami rich flavor.
Why we carry them
We love having a neighbor across the bay that takes spices this seriously. Their blends are an easy way to make a weeknight dinner taste like more effort.
