Their story

Verve started in November 2007 in Pleasure Point, a surf neighborhood in Santa Cruz, when college friends Colby Barr and Ryan O'Donovan opened their first cafe. Ryan brought years in the coffee trade and Colby a background in agriculture. They took the name from a jazz label in their record collection.

The company has grown into cafes across Santa Cruz, Los Angeles, the Bay Area and Japan, while roasting still happens at its Seabright roastery in Santa Cruz. Along the way it picked up a Good Food Award in 2013 and Roast Magazine's Macro Roaster of the Year in 2024.

How it's made

Through its Farmlevel program, Verve pays premiums above Fair Trade minimums and works with producers on farm improvements, climate resilience and heirloom varieties, including a tree nursery project in Colombia. The beans are roasted daily in small batches on restored vintage Probat roasters.

Why we carry them

We like Verve for its clean, bright coffees and for how openly it talks about the farms behind them. The Streetlevel blend is an easy everyday place to start.
