Their story

Antonio Benedetto Carpano was a distiller from Bioglio, in the hills near Biella, who set up shop in Turin in the late 1700s. In 1786 he began flavoring white wine with herbs and spices, and the drink he made is widely credited as the first modern vermouth.

Turin took to it quickly. The story goes that demand was strong enough for his shop to stay open around the clock, and the habit of a bittersweet glass before dinner helped shape the Italian aperitivo.

Today the Carpano name is produced and distributed by Fratelli Branca Distillerie of Milan. The lineup includes Carpano Antica Formula, Carpano Classico, Carpano Bianco and Punt e Mes.

How it's made

Carpano vermouths follow the method Antonio Benedetto Carpano used in 1786: wine infused with a blend of herbs and spices, then sweetened and fortified. Each expression balances botanicals and bitterness differently, from the rich Antica Formula to the sharper Punt e Mes.

Why we carry them

We think every home bar needs a bottle of Carpano. Try Antica Formula in a Manhattan or Negroni, or pour it over ice with an orange twist.
