Their story

1792 is made at the Barton 1792 Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky, a sprawling site of nearly 200 acres near Morton's Spring. Its roots go back to the 1870s, when Ben Mattingly started distilling there and Tom Moore, an employee, later took over and merged it with a distillery of his own next door.

The site changed hands many times after Prohibition, and the Barton name first appeared during those years. The 1792 bourbon began as Ridgewood Reserve 1792, was renamed 1792 Ridgemont Reserve after a trademark dispute with Brown-Forman, and eventually became simply 1792.

Sazerac bought the distillery in 2009 and renamed it Barton 1792 Distillery. The bourbon's name honors 1792, the year Kentucky joined the Union.

How it's made

1792 is a high-rye bourbon, which gives the small batch bottling its spicy character. It is aged in the distillery's many rickhouses, which can hold around two million barrels, and is released in several expressions including Small Batch, Single Barrel and Full Proof.

Why we carry them

We reach for 1792 Small Batch when someone wants a bourbon with a bit more spice than the usual wheated pours. It's a solid, well-priced Kentucky classic.
