Their story

Czechvar is the American name for the lager from Budějovický Budvar, the brewery in České Budějovice, a South Bohemian city known in German as Budweis. Beer has been brewed in the city since the 13th century, and local brewers joined together to found Budvar in 1895.

The brewery was nationalized after World War II and is still owned by the Czech state. A long trademark fight with Anheuser-Busch over the Budweiser name means the beer is sold in the US as Czechvar, while at home it carries the Budvar name.

In 2004 the EU granted the beer Protected Geographical Indication status, tying it to its home city.

How it's made

Budvar brews with artesian water drawn from deep wells beneath the city, Moravian barley and Saaz hops from the Žatec region. The beer is lagered for at least 90 days, far longer than most mass-market lagers.

Why we carry them

If you want to taste what a Bohemian pilsner-style lager is supposed to be, we think this is a great place to start: crisp, bready and gently bitter.
