Their story
Deerhammer is run by Lenny and Amy Eckstein in Buena Vista, a small town in Colorado's Arkansas River valley. Lenny moved to Colorado from Philadelphia in 1999 and spent about 15 years as a graphic artist before home brewing pulled him toward distilling.
The couple founded Deerhammer in 2010 in a 2,000 square foot building on East Main Street, and produced their first single malt in January 2012. The lineup has since grown to include bourbon, rye and a hickory smoked whiskey alongside the flagship American single malt.
How it's made
The single malt starts with a mash of 100% malted barley built in a porter style. It ferments in open air, is double distilled in direct-fire copper pot stills and is aged in charred new American oak.
Why we carry them
Deerhammer's single malt is a good bottle for anyone curious about how American distillers are taking on malt whiskey. We like the toasty, bready character that comes from that porter-style mash.
