Their story
Del Maguey was founded in 1995 by Ron Cooper, an American artist who fell for the mezcal made by family producers in rural Oaxaca. Instead of blending, he bottled each producer's mezcal on its own and named it for the village where it was made.
That single village idea helped introduce many drinkers outside Mexico to traditional mezcal. The brand works with about a dozen producing families in Oaxaca and Puebla. In 2017 Pernod Ricard acquired a majority stake in the company.
How it's made
Each partner family owns and runs its own palenque, or small distillery, and makes mezcal in its village's traditional way. Del Maguey never blends between producers, so every bottle reflects one place and one family's process.
Why we carry them
Del Maguey is how many of us first learned how different one village's mezcal can be from the next. Try two side by side and the point makes itself.
