Domaine de Montreuil
Giard family Calvados from hilltop orchards in the Pays d'Auge.

Their story
Patrice Giard and his wife, Michelle, run Domaine de Montreuil from a hilltop in Montreuil-en-Auge, in Normandy's Pays d'Auge. The Giard family traces its history here back twelve generations, to the 1700s.
Patrice took over from his father, Roger, who retired in his nineties. Since 2006 Patrice has worked with importer Charles Neal on the Selection and Reserve bottlings, blended with cocktails in mind.
How it's made
About 3,000 tall, free-standing trees grow across 30 hectares of orchard, and the apples are gathered once they fall. The cider ferments on its lees in seasoned casks and rests about a year before double distillation in an alembic pot still from the Cognac region. The spirit ages in old oak and is brought down to bottling strength gradually with rainwater.
Why we carry them
We like Montreuil's Calvados for sipping and for mixing; it's classic Normandy apple brandy from a family that has been at it for centuries.
