Their story
Don Julio takes its name from Don Julio González, who started distilling tequila in 1942 at just 17 years old in Atotonilco el Alto, in the highlands of Jalisco. Agave for the brand has long come from the family's estate in the surrounding hills.
His early tequila, Tres Magueyes, laid the groundwork for the Don Julio range, and the 1942 añejo is named for the year he began. Don Julio González died in 2012.
The brand changed hands over the years. Seagram invested in 1999, Diageo bought a half share in 2003, and in 2014 Diageo took full ownership. It is now one of the best-known premium tequilas in the world.
How it's made
Blue agave grows for about seven years before it is harvested by hand. The hearts are cut and baked slowly for several days in brick ovens, then crushed, fermented and distilled. Blanco rests in stainless steel, while aged expressions mature in ex-bourbon barrels.
Why we carry them
Don Julio is a dependable choice when you want a polished highlands tequila. The 1942 makes an easy gift for the tequila lover in your life.
