Their story
El Mero Mero comes from San Dionisio Ocotepec, a dry, remote village in central Oaxaca where the agave grows slowly in limestone soil. Production is overseen by mezcalero Justino Garcia Cruz, and the brand was created to share the kind of mezcal that mezcaleros drink themselves.
The brand began operations in 2011. Rural and hard to reach, the area long kept its mezcals mostly local, and El Mero Mero helped bring them to a wider audience.
How it's made
The agave is dry farmed, with fields fertilized using bagazo, the spent agave fiber. The cooked hearts are crushed by tahona, fermented in oak tubs and double distilled in copper. Each batch is small, made without additives, and brought to proof with the heads and tails rather than water.
Why we carry them
We like El Mero Mero for showing what a single Oaxacan village tastes like. Start with the Espadin, then try the Tobala if you can find it.
