Their story
Fernet Francisco was created for a city that drinks more fernet than almost anywhere. Max Rudsten spent years macerating and barrel-aging herbs in his backyard before teaming up with Ben Flajnik to make a version built on local ingredients.
They brought in distiller Farid Dormishian, a biochemist and winemaker behind Falcon Spirits, as a third partner, and released the amaro in 2015.
How it's made
Twelve herbs and botanicals sourced in the Bay Area, including rhubarb, chamomile, orange peel, bay leaf and mint, go into the recipe. The core distillate is vapor infused, blended with organic grain spirit and a local grape brandy, then aged for about a month.
I catalogued over 50 herbs and botanicals in an effort to hone in on the perfect flavor profile.
Why we carry them
We like Fernet Francisco for a local, slightly softer take on the city's favorite shot. Try it with ginger ale or neat after dinner.
