Their story

Forthave Spirits is a micro-distillery in Brooklyn run by Daniel de la Nuez, a Brooklyn native who spent his earlier career producing film and television. The spark was a friend's homemade herbal liqueur; de la Nuez offered his house as a workshop, got hooked, and spent a few years learning to distill before the full launch in January 2017.

The distillery works out of the Pfizer Building in Williamsburg, near the Bed-Stuy line. The name nods to Richard Forthave, a figure from an old legend about an herbal tonic made during the plague, and the bottles were designed by Aaron Fox.

How it's made

De la Nuez handles each step of production himself rather than scaling up with a big staff. The lineup includes Red, a bitter aperitivo; Blue, an American dry gin; and Marseille, an amaro built on cinnamon, eucalyptus and honey, where the bitterness stays in the background.

Why we carry them

Forthave Red makes a terrific Negroni or spritz if you want something a little different from the usual Italian bitters. The Marseille amaro is a gentle, warming after-dinner sipper.
