Their story
Freeland Spirits was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 2017 by Jill Kuehler, who came to spirits from farming. She fell for small-scale agriculture in the Peace Corps in Guatemala and later worked at Zenger Farm, Portland's urban farm. The idea for a distillery came from a talk with her friend Cory Carman of Carman Ranch, who could grow the grain.
The company is named for Kuehler's grandmother, who never drank. Its master distiller, Molly Troupe, brings a chemistry background to the still.
How it's made
Nearly every bottle has an Oregon partner behind it. The gin is built around cucumber, rosemary, mint and thyme; the Geneva uses Oregon grain and Willamette Valley hazelnuts; and the bourbon finishes in Pinot Noir barrels from Elk Cove Winery.
Why we carry them
Freeland's gin is bright and herbal, great in a gin and tonic with a cucumber slice. We also like the bourbon for its Pinot Noir barrel finish.
