George Remus
High-rye bourbon from Lawrenceburg, named for Prohibition's King of the Bootleggers.
- Based in
- Lawrenceburg, Indiana
Their story
George Remus bourbon takes its name from a Cincinnati lawyer who ran one of the most elaborate bootlegging operations of Prohibition. Known as the King of the Bootleggers, Remus bought up well-known distilleries, made and lost a fortune, and is often cited as a possible model for Jay Gatsby.
The whiskey is made by MGP at its historic distillery in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, a site with roughly 170 years of distilling behind it. MGP introduced the current George Remus bourbon, in a redesigned bottle, in 2017 and later added single barrel releases.
How it's made
George Remus is a blend of high-rye bourbons distilled and aged at the Lawrenceburg distillery. The core straight bourbon is aged more than four years before bottling.
Why we carry them
We like George Remus as a spicy, well-priced bourbon with a great story. It mixes well in an Old Fashioned and holds up neat.
