Golden State Distillery
Southern California craft distillery behind Gray Whale Gin.
- Founded by
- Marsh Mokhtari
- Based in
- California
Their story
Golden State Distillery came out of Los Angeles' Westside, where founder Marsh Mokhtari, a former actor, TV host and producer, set out to put California flavor into a line of spirits. The brand launched around 2017, producing with Rob Rubens Distilling in El Segundo.
Its best-known bottle is Gray Whale Gin, built around botanicals gathered along the California coast. The company later completed a deal with Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits involving the brand.
How it's made
Gray Whale Gin draws its botanicals from up and down the coast, including Douglas fir from Northern California, oranges from Central California and jalapeno from Mexico. The company describes itself as a farm-to-bottle California craft distillery.
Why we carry them
Gray Whale Gin tastes like a drive up Highway 1, piney and bright. We like it in a simple gin and tonic with an orange twist.
