Their story

Grander is the work of Dan DeHart, a Kentuckian who left a corporate career to build a rum brand. He named it after the fishing term for a marlin over a thousand pounds, and released the first bottles in 2015.

The rum is made at Las Cabras distillery in Herrera province, Panama, a few hours' drive from Panama City, in a former sugar mill that dates to 1919. Blending there is overseen by Francisco "Don Pancho" Fernandez, a Cuban-born master blender with decades of experience. DeHart calls the result a single-origin rum, since every step happens in Panama.

How it's made

Sugarcane is grown and milled locally, and the molasses is fermented with a house yeast cultivated from pineapples before column distillation. The 8 Year ages in first-fill ex-bourbon barrels, mostly from Kentucky distilleries, and the 12 Year in refill bourbon casks with some sherry seasoning. Both are bottled at 45% ABV with no added color, flavor, or sugar, and without chill filtration.

Why we carry them

We reach for Grander when someone says they only drink bourbon: it is dry, oak-forward, and honest about what is in the bottle.
