Great Notion
Portland brewery known for hazy, fruit-forward IPAs and dessert-minded sours and stouts.
- Founded by
- James Dugan, Andy Miller, Paul Reiter
- Based in
- Portland, Oregon
Their story
Great Notion was started by three friends and neighbors in Portland, Oregon: James Dugan, head brewer Andy Miller, and Paul Reiter. Their first pub sits on Alberta Street in Northeast Portland.
The brewery has since grown to taprooms around Portland, in Seattle, and in Berkeley, with a production brewery in Northwest Portland. It has picked up medals at the World Beer Cup, the Great American Beer Festival, and the Oregon Beer Awards, and keeps its tone playful, with a stated aim of keeping beer fun.
How it's made
Great Notion built its name on hazy IPAs loaded with fruity hops, alongside sours and stouts that borrow ideas from the kitchen and the pastry case. Much of the beer is sold fresh through its own taprooms and shipped direct, with select cans reaching shops along the West Coast.
Why we carry them
For anyone who likes their IPA juicy rather than bitter, Great Notion is one of the Northwest breweries we point to first.
