Spirits
Mal Bien
Mezcal and agave spirits that put the maker's name first.
- Founded by
- Ben Scott, Anthony Silas
Their story
Mal Bien was started by Ben Scott and Anthony Silas, who spend much of their time in small villages across Oaxaca, Guerrero and other parts of Mexico. Beginning in 2020, they built direct relationships with families who distill agave spirits, some of them in very remote places.
The brand works with about a dozen families and runs its own import and export companies so that as few middlemen as possible stand between the maker and the drinker. Each release is treated as a small, specific batch rather than a house style.
How it's made
Every spirit is made by its producing family using their own traditional methods, which vary from village to village. Each label names the family, the region, the year it was made and the GPS coordinates of the distillery, so you know exactly where your bottle came from.
Our featured pick
Espadin Con Zacate Limon: Lucio Morales Lopez Mezcal (Espadin | 200ML)
$22.00
Known as a "destilado con," this spirit is crafted by macerating fresh Zacate Limón (lemongrass) in the agave spirit before its final distillation.
We believe that the person who makes it, their name should be as big as our brand name on the bottle.
Why we carry them
We send curious mezcal drinkers to Mal Bien to taste how much one village can differ from the next. The labels tell you whose work is in the glass.
