Their story

Planteray is the rum range of Maison Ferrand, the family-run Cognac house led by owner and master blender Alexandre Gabriel. The brand launched in 1999 as Plantation Rum, built on the idea of pairing Caribbean rums with French cask aging.

In 2020 the company announced it would drop the Plantation name after hearing how it connected to slavery. Registering a new name across more than 120 markets took about three years, and the brand relaunched as Planteray in January 2024, a name meant to nod to sugarcane and the Caribbean sun. Maison Ferrand also owns West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, bought in 2017.

How it's made

Rums are distilled and first aged in the Caribbean and other rum-producing countries, then many are shipped to France for further aging in casks that previously held Ferrand cognac. The Barbados team at West Indies Rum Distillery and the blending team in France work together on the range.

If a name and our name create hurt, it is not part of our mission.
Alexandre Gabriel, owner and master blender, to The Drinks Business (2024)
