Their story

St. George Spirits makes its gins, whiskeys, brandies, and liqueurs inside a 65,000-square-foot airplane hangar on the former Alameda naval air station. Master distiller Lance Winters and head distiller Dave Smith own and run the distillery today.

Jörg Rupf founded St. George in 1982 as an eau de vie distillery. In 1996 he hired Winters, a brewer with a background in nuclear science, and together they began making single malt whiskey. The distillery moved into the hangar in 2004 and Rupf retired as master distiller in 2010.

Over the years the team has released the first American absinthe after the ban was lifted, created Hangar One vodka (later sold to Proximo Spirits), and built a lineup that includes Terroir and Botanivore gins and Bruto Americano.

How it's made

St. George works in small batches, starting from fruit, herbs, and grain rather than flavorings. Its fruit brandies and eau de vie carry on the distillery's original craft, and the single malt is built on 100% two-row barley, some of it heavily roasted, aged in a range of casks.

Why we carry them

St. George is about as local as great spirits get for us, made just across the bay. The gins are a fine place to start if you are new to the distillery.
