Their story
TCHO was started in 2005 by Timothy Childs, a tech entrepreneur who once built vision systems for NASA's Space Shuttle program, and Karl Bittong, who had spent more than 40 years in the chocolate trade. The company made its name at Pier 17 on San Francisco's Embarcadero before moving across the bay to West Berkeley.
In 2018 TCHO was acquired by Ezaki Glico, the Japanese confectionery company. It still makes chocolate in Berkeley, and between 2021 and 2022 it moved its whole line to plant-based recipes.
How it's made
Through its TCHO Source program, the company works directly with cacao farmers and co-ops, sharing tools and know-how and setting up flavor labs so growers can taste and improve their own beans. The range includes dark and plant-based bars, drinking chocolate, cocoa powder, nibs and baking chocolate.
