Their story

Wild Turkey is made at its distillery in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. For decades its whiskey has been guided by Master Distiller Jimmy Russell, one of the best known figures in bourbon.

The name dates to 1940, when Thomas McCarthy, an executive at the importer Austin Nichols, brought warehouse samples on a wild turkey hunting trip. His friends kept asking for that bourbon, and Austin Nichols began bottling it as Wild Turkey in 1942. For years the company bought its whiskey from the Ripy family's distillery nearby, and in 1971 it bought a Lawrenceburg distillery outright and renamed it Wild Turkey.

Pernod Ricard acquired the brand in 1980, and the Campari Group has owned it since 2009.

How it's made

Wild Turkey uses a mash bill with a lower share of corn than most bourbons. The spirit is distilled to a relatively low proof, well under the legal limit, which keeps more grain character. The whiskey ages in new charred oak barrels, and the distillery treats its limestone-rich water to balance its alkalinity.

Why we carry them

We keep Wild Turkey on hand because it is a dependable, full-flavored bourbon that does well neat and holds its own in an old fashioned.
