Their story
Abokichi is a small Toronto company started by Fumi Tsukamoto and Jess Mantell. Jess fell for onigiri, Japanese rice balls, while living in Tokyo, and missed them when she came home to Canada.
The two began selling onigiri at farmers markets around Toronto. The name blends abokado, Japanese for avocado, with kichi, a character tied to good luck.
They made a miso-based topping for their rice balls, and customers kept asking to buy it on its own. That topping became Okazu, now sold in jars.
How it's made
Okazu is a condiment built on miso and sesame oil, with chili or curry spices depending on the flavor. The founders set out to make it without the preservatives, MSG and stabilizers they found in many imported Japanese products. It comes in Chili Miso, Spicy Chili Miso and Curry Miso.

Why we carry them
We love Okazu spooned over rice, eggs or noodles. It's like a savory chili crisp with a deep miso backbone.
