Their story
Absolut traces its roots to Lars Olsson Smith, a 19th-century Swedish spirits entrepreneur who built a business purifying and distilling spirits near Stockholm. The Absolut name dates to 1879, and Smith's portrait medallion still appears on the bottle.
The modern brand was created by Sweden's state-owned Vin & Sprit and launched in the US in 1979. Its clear bottle, inspired by an old Swedish pharmacy bottle, became one of the best-known shapes in the spirits world.
Pernod Ricard bought Vin & Sprit in 2008. Absolut is still made only in Åhus, in southern Sweden.
How it's made
Absolut is distilled from Swedish winter wheat, unusual at a time when Swedish spirits were often made from potatoes. Production happens entirely in Åhus, and the vodka is made through multiple distillations for a clean, smooth spirit.
