Their story

Steve Sartori opened Altamont Beer Works in Livermore in 2012, around the corner from some of the valley's wineries. A small taproom followed in 2013, then a big expansion in 2018 and a second production brewery in 2024.

The brewery is known above all for Maui Waui, a tropical West Coast double IPA that makes up most of what it brews. The lineup also runs to lagers, a Kölsch, a Festbier and a peanut butter stout.

How it's made

Sartori builds each recipe around the flavor he wants, choosing from the hops on hand and visiting his hop supplier in Yakima, Washington. Many of the IPAs are dry hopped late in the process, which brings out aroma while keeping bitterness smooth.

With beer, I check the dozen or so hops on hand to consider the overall flavor profile I want from the beer.

Why we carry them

Maui Waui is a Tri-Valley favorite for a reason. We like having an East Bay IPA this fruity and easy to drink on the shelf.
