Amargero
A bitter orange aperitivo grown and bottled on a small Mallorcan horse farm.

Their story
Amargero comes from Can Cavall Blau, a four-hectare farm a few minutes outside Sencelles in the middle of Mallorca. Katja Lebelt and her husband, a horse vet, bought the land to raise polo horses, drawn by its well, its water rights and its old oak trees.
A few years later they planted around 400 fruit and olive trees, and the bitter oranges became the base for a small-batch aperitivo. The name of the farm nods to Franz Marc's painting The Blue Horse, since blau means blue in both German and Mallorquin.
Today the farm also makes a little wine, loquat jam, vinegar, olives and almonds, and opens its gates for farm tours and Sunday polo with an aperitivo hour.
How it's made
The bitter oranges are picked on the farm and turned into a liqueur with just fruit, alcohol and sugar, with no additives. Production is made with a local distillery and runs to only a few thousand bottles a year.

Why we carry them
We like how close to the tree this one stays: you taste real bitter orange peel, not a flavoring. Pour it over ice with soda for an easy Mallorcan-style spritz.
