Their story

Amaro Montenegro was first made in Bologna in 1885 by Stanislao Cobianchi. He originally called it Elisir Lungavita, or elixir of long life.

In 1896 he renamed it in honor of Princess Elena of Montenegro, who had just married the Italian crown prince, later King Victor Emmanuel III. The name stuck, and the bottle became one of the best known amari in Italy.

It is still produced near Bologna, at the company's facility in San Lazzaro di Savena.

How it's made

The recipe is a proprietary blend of 40 botanicals, including orange peel, vanilla and eucalyptus. The botanicals are processed near Bologna and blended into a lighter, floral style of amaro.

Why we carry them

We like Montenegro for people who think they don't like amaro. It is soft, floral and orange-forward, and it shines in a highball or a twist on a Negroni.
