Their story
The Verdi family has farmed the hills around Canneto Pavese, in Lombardy's Oltrepo Pavese, since the 18th century, when Antonio Verdi settled there. The early farm grew wheat, corn, mulberries, and grapes, and a third-generation Verdi, Luigi, was the first to make wine from the family vineyards.
After World War II, Bruno Verdi bottled wine at the estate for the first time and put his name on the label. His son Paolo now runs the winery from the hamlet of Vergomberra, pairing traditional methods with careful modern winemaking.
How it's made
Hillside vineyards are planted to local grapes like Croatina, Uva Rara, Barbera, and Ughetta di Canneto, plus Pinot Nero and Riesling. Grapes are picked by hand into small crates, and the family also buys from a few small local growers, some of them relatives.
Why we carry them
We love Bruno Verdi for a look at a corner of Italy most people skip. Their reds are great with salumi and rich pasta.
