Their story

Bungkus Bagus is run by sisters Tara and Celene Carrara, who grew up in Bali around big family meals and learned many dishes from their Indonesian stepmother. After both lost their jobs in 2020, they started hosting pop-ups from home in Glendale, serving nasi bungkus, the banana-leaf-wrapped rice meal that gave the business its name.

Their sambal goreng, a crunchy topping of fried shallots, garlic, and chilies, became the breakout product. They moved production to a commercial kitchen in the Arts District, and the jars are now sold in shops across the country.

How it's made

Shallots, garlic, and chilies are chopped and fried until crisp, then jarred in small batches in a Los Angeles commercial kitchen. The move from a home kitchen let them make about 500 jars a day.

The concept has always really been about connecting with people and sharing this amazing place.

Why we carry them

We spoon this sambal over eggs, rice, noodles, and pretty much anything that needs crunch and heat. It is one of the most addictive condiments on our shelves.
