Their story
Cantine Olivella is based in Sant'Anastasia, just outside Naples, with vineyards on Monte Somma, the oldest part of the Vesuvius volcano. Winemaker Andrea Cozzolino started the project in 2004.
The vineyards sit inside Vesuvius National Park, surrounded by forest, and climb from about 900 to 2,400 feet. The estate works with grapes that are rarely seen outside the area, such as Catalanesca, Caprettone and the red Olivella.
How it's made
The roughly 30 acres are certified organic and worked entirely by hand, with herbs grown between rows to guard against erosion and pests. Many vines grow on their own roots in the sandy lava soil. Grapes are hand-picked, usually in October, and fermented with native yeasts.
Why we carry them
We love these wines for their smoky, salty edge from the volcano. Try the Catalanesca with pizza or fried seafood.
