Their story
Château La Vieille Cure lies in Saillans, on the banks of the Isle River in Bordeaux's Fronsac appellation. Vines have grown on the site since at least the 1600s, and the estate appears on a late 18th-century map as a single 20-hectare parcel. In the early 1900s it was worked by the Barraud family.
In 1986 two American investment bankers, Colin Ferenbach and Peter Sachs, bought the property, and Donald Gant joined them in 1996. They replanted vineyards, built a new winery, began bottling at the estate and brought in enologist Michel Rolland as consultant, helping put the then overlooked Fronsac back on wine lovers' radar.
How it's made
The blend is built mostly on Merlot with Cabernet Franc and a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon. The team introduced strict grape selection and thinned leaves so the fruit could ripen fully in the sun and wind. A second wine, La Sacristie de La Vieille Cure, is also made.
