Their story

Can Descregut is a small family winery run by Arantxa de Cara and her husband, Marc Milà, in the Penedès region of Catalonia. The winery sits inside an old farmhouse, the Masia de Can Descregut, which gives the wines their name, with vineyards spread between Vilobí and Font-rubí.

The couple bought the estate in 1992, and for years it sold base wine to cava houses. In 2005 they began converting the vineyards to organic farming and started bottling their own wines. Today it is one of the producers in Corpinnat, the group of growers who left the Cava appellation to hold themselves to stricter rules.

How it's made

The vines, including old plantings of Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada and Sumoll, grow mostly on clay soils and are farmed organically. Under Corpinnat rules, grapes are picked by hand and the wines are made on the estate, with sparkling wines aged at least 18 months on the lees. The winery makes around 5,000 cases a year of sparkling and still wine.

Why we carry them

Can Descregut is a great introduction to grower sparkling wine from Penedès, made by a family that farms every vine. We like it any time someone asks for a Champagne alternative.
