Meaño, Galicia

Their story

Gerardo Méndez came from a family of blacksmiths, and he named his wine for them: Do Ferreiro means "from the blacksmith" in Galician. The family home in Meaño looks out on the Ría de Arousa, in the Val do Salnés area of Rías Baixas.

Gerardo made his first wine in 1973 and was one of the 14 growers who helped create the Rías Baixas denomination in 1988. In 2015 his son Manuel took over the winemaking, while his daughter Encarna runs daily operations, and the next generation has added single-vineyard bottlings.

How it's made

The wines come from the family's own Albariño vineyards around Meaño. Their Cepas Vellas comes from a pre-phylloxera vineyard in front of the house, more than 200 years old, said to hold the oldest documented Albariño vines in the region.

Why we carry them

Do Ferreiro shows Albariño at its most serious, salty and focused. We like it with oysters, shellfish, or anything off the grill.
