Their story
Philippe Girard and Jean-François Girard make wine in Alaigne, a circular medieval village in the Aude, with vineyards set 350 to 450 meters up.
The Girards have grown grapes for four generations, but they began bottling their own wine in 2000, when Philippe took over. The estate now covers 35 hectares across the Malepère and Limoux appellations and IGP Pays d'Oc.
How it's made
The Limoux Chardonnay, Las Salvios, comes from clay-limestone soils and is aged in oak. The Malepère reds blend Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with Malbec in the oak-aged Cuvée Néri, and the estate also bottles varietal Chardonnay and Chenin.
Why we carry them
These high vineyards give Languedoc wine a freshness that surprises people, and the Chardonnay is a nice alternative to white Burgundy.
