Their story
Julian and Sebastian Erggelet are brothers from Germany who came to California in 2014. They cut their teeth at high-end Napa estates, Julian at Seven Stones and Sebastian at Ovid, before turning their attention east to Contra Costa County.
There, around Brentwood, Antioch and Oakley, they found century-old vineyards of Mataro, Zinfandel and Carignan. They work only with Contra Costa fruit, including the Del Barba Vineyard in Oakley, planted in the early 1900s, and the Cecchini Vineyard, owned by the family of Julian's wife, Alli, where Julian helped plant Malvasia.
How it's made
The brothers favor sustainable farming and keep intervention in the cellar to a minimum. They aim for ripe but focused fruit rather than jammy wines, letting the sandy old-vine sites of the Delta speak for themselves.
Why we carry them
We love a local story, and the Erggelets are giving overlooked East Bay vineyards the attention they deserve. Their rustic reds are a great way to taste California history close to home.
