Their story
François and Manuela Chidaine work out of Montlouis-sur-Loire, with prized parcels across the river in Vouvray, both Chenin Blanc country in Touraine.
François took over his family's vines in 1989, building on an estate started a generation earlier. Manuela joined in 1999 and opened La Cave Insolite, a shop and tasting room in Montlouis that features small growers from across France.
How it's made
The Chidaines farm about 30 hectares of Chenin Blanc, many vines 40 to 80 years old, with organic and biodynamic certification since 2003 and vineyard work timed to the Maria Thun calendar. Wines are made with a light touch and range from dry to sweet in the right vintages, plus a traditional-method sparkling Montlouis and single-parcel cuvées such as Clos du Breuil and Les Bournais.
Why we carry them
Chidaine is one of our go-to names for Chenin Blanc; the dry Montlouis is a good place to start, and the sparkling is a smart pick for a party.
