Gini

Centuries-old family estate making Soave from very old Garganega vines.

Founded by
Gini family (today Sandro and Claudio Gini, with Matteo Gini)
Based in
Monteforte d'Alpone, Veneto

Their story

The Gini family has farmed the hills above Monteforte d'Alpone, in the heart of Soave Classico, for centuries, and land deeds from the 1800s record their purchase of the Salvarenza vineyard. Grandfather Giuseppe was known locally for his winemaking, and after he died young his son Olinto took over at just 16, selling wine by horse-drawn cart in nearby towns.

Today Olinto's sons Sandro and Claudio run the estate with Sandro's son Matteo. The brothers looked to the great family domaines of Burgundy as a model, and they spent years convincing skeptical restaurateurs that Soave could be a serious wine.

How it's made

The estate farms about 25 hectares of hillside vines on volcanic and limestone soils, some of them pre-phylloxera and ungrafted, and has been certified organic since 2015. Grapes are picked by hand over roughly two months. Fermentation uses only native yeasts, and the wines rest on their lees, some in small oak casks.

Why we carry them

If you think you know Soave, try Gini. These old-vine whites have real depth and age beautifully, and they show what this region can do.
