Their story
Altxor is a txakoli from Bodega Gaintza, a family estate on windy bluffs just above the Bay of Biscay in Getaria. Andrés Lazkano first made wine from his family's pergola-trained Hondarrabi Zuri in 1923, and four generations of the Lazkano family have run it since.
The vineyards surround the Golindo farmhouse, tucked against Mount Garate. The winery was modernized in 2012, but the old high pergolas and hand harvest remain.
How it's made
Grapes come from about 25 hectares of estate vines on clay and limestone soils and are picked by hand. The wine is mostly Hondarrabi Zuri with a little Hondarrabi Beltza, fermented cool with native yeast in stainless steel, with no oak and a natural light spritz.
Why we carry them
We pour txakoli whenever there are oysters or anchovies on the table. Altxor has that bright, briny snap we look for.
